Happy New Year everyone & thanks for your trust & confidence in Chelsea Insurance Agency. 2011 was a tough year for claims with 3 severe “catastrophic claims” occurring in Connecticut: Winter Storms bringing massive weight of ice & snow on roofs causing collapse & “ice damming,” Hurricane Irene & Alfred bring “Snowtober.” Everyone in New England was effected on some level & let’s not forget the flooding in Vermont.

Chelsea Insurance has been in business for 17 years and we have never experienced the frequency & severity of claims like we had in 2011. Sure there are always car accidents, incidental house claims, slips & falls at businesses but 2011 brought a variety of claims not often occurring such as refridgerated products loss at personal homes, additional living expenses, food spoilage at restaurants, loss of income at residents because “the utility company” could not supply power.

These claims brought work to many contractors & suppliers that were looking for work in a slow economy & what keeps an economy moving is money changing hands.

Like you, we know nobody likes paying too much for anything especially oil, gas, groceries & especially insurance. There is “over kill” of advertising for your insurance on TV, the radio, internet & print – the industry has conditioned much of the public that all insurance is created equal & cheapest is best. The value of the protection has been reduced to a commodity.

Football, American Football as in Let’s Get Ready For Some Football is one of the most exciting sports to watch (& play). It doesn’t matter what level it’s at: sand lot, Midget, Pee Wee, High School, College or Pro Football – it’s all good. Thanksgiving is a celebration that has been part of the American lifestyle for almost 400 years. As the story goes, pilgrims in fall of 1621 were out hunting for their annual Thanksgiving feast when their gunshots were heard by the local Wampanoag Native Americans. The tribe thought the settlers were preparing for battle so the chief took 90 of his men over to their camp to see if their suspicions could be confirmed. Upon arrival, though, they realized that the settlers were simply hunting for a feast, so the chief instructed his men to join them. For three days women, children, the English and native men dined together.

This holiday not only is a celebration of harvest, but of togetherness and of communities. It is a day that proves that people from all walks and realms of life can live peacefully and celebrate one another.

You can’t turn on the television or the radio without having insurance in your face: lizards, good hands, Farmers, Flo, 21st Century, USAA, AMICA etc etc. These guys have unlimited advertising budgets & I find it nauseating. Collectively they have reduced the value of insurance protection down to a commodity, that all insurance is the same & cheapest is best. It’s like a guy that opens his trench coat make you a deal you can’t refuse. All that glitters is not gold.

There are downsides to internet buying and calling 800 numbers. These “MERCHANTS” have one product & one goal in mind & that is to make you their customer. Naturally anyone in business needs to make sales but are all your options offered?

We know insurance is a wicked competitive industry that’s why we have MANY companies to place your business through. Often times, we do what they do with better coverage, a better price AND you can see and speak to us face to face. Like them, we’ve got an awesome website , two 800 numbers & people that answer the telephone with a pleasant voice. Happy Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day — one of the most well deserved holidays that this country recognized; one for the people, earned by the people. How did it start though? World War I, also called “The Great War,” officially ended with the Treaty of Versailles which was signed on June 28, 1919. However, fighting between the Allied Nations and Germany had actually ceased several months later when an armistice — a temporary cessation of hostilities — went into effect on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, on the eleventh month. So November 11, 1918 is generally recognized as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

The following year President Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, stating,
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

The concept for the celebration was a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 AM. In 1938 an act made the 11th of November a legal holiday to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to there after be celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” However, after American Armed forces had fought aggression in Korea, urged by veterans service organizations, the 83rd Congress amended the Act of 1938, replacing the word ‘armistice’ with ‘veteran.’ Hence, Veteran’s Day was born.
